Spandau Ballet
A big part of making it big in popular music in the early 1980s - and every era for that matter -
was finding the right look. Spandau Ballet went through a few looks, including putting kilts on
everyone, before they nailed it. The successful formula included neat suits with skinny ties, hair
with a ton of mousse, a soulful sound and the Frank Sinatra-esque style of singer Tony Hadley.
With the rise of Spandau Ballet the music press had to come up with a new category, so the new romantic
phrase was coined. The new romantic ranks would swell as Ultravox, ABC, Duran Duran and a host of others
found success.
Best known for their 1983 hit "True," Spandau Ballet had a run of hits at home in the UK, including "Gold"
and "Only When You Leave."
