Tears for Fears
Roland Orzabal wrote the songs, sang some of them, and played guitar and keyboards.
Curt Smith sang as well as playing bass and keyboards. Born within two months of each
other in Bath, England, the two grew up together playing in rock and ska bands before
forming Tears for Fears.
Orzabel and Smith's synth-driven pop hit the scene at just the right time. They hit the
number 3 spot in the UK charts with an early single, "Mad World," and followed that up
with the successful singles "Pale Shelter" and "Change."
Both their 1983 debut album The Hurting and their 1986 album Songs from the Big Chair
are beautiful examples of the potential of 'synth-pop' in that the music is moving,
the lyrics are meaningful and the production excellent.
It took the band four years to record and mix The Seeds of Love, time which proved to
be too much for these childhood friends. It would be the last Tears for Fears album
featuring both Smith and Orzabal, though Orzabal has continued to record under the
Tears for Fears name.
