ZZ Top
Houston, Texas rock band ZZ Top came together in 1970. They relied heavily on their
Texas roots for their image (back country good-old-boys with beards to their knees),
their live shows (their stage props included cattle) and sound (standard blues riffs).
In the 1980s, ZZ Top was able to do what many traditional rock bands of the 70's were
not: use the new medium of rock videos to their commercial advantage.
The band scored hit after hit from their 1983 Eliminator album, including "Legs" and
"Sharp Dressed Man."
There was nothing particularly original as far as the prevalent themes in their
videos - fast cars and fast women. Each new video presented another male fantasy
following an established pattern, with some regular guy finding himself the object of
some bombshell's sexual passion, then being handed the ZZ Top keys to the ZZ Top hot
rod so as to ride off in style and glory.
